In some sense, yes it does. Practicing a lot will help you improve and then you can compete and get rating increase. But directly…Nope.

Doing practice problems on CodeChef doesn’t increase your rating. The only way to increase your rating on CodeChef is participating in rated contest.

In general, there are three monthly rated contest and sometimes more.

Long Challenges - Mostly starts in 1st week of every month and last for 10 days.

Short Challenges - Cook-off and Lunchtime which are more or less organized in 3rd and 4th week of every month respectively. (Duration 3 hours.)

how do we know if the contest is rated?

It is usually mentioned on the contest page. The official codechef contests (Long Challenge, Lunchtime, Cookoff) are always rated unless there is some announcement after the contest regarding it.

can anyone tell me how many questions we need to solve to get the rating above 2000 in one contest
