I disagree.
Allow me to present my point of view.
The relevance of a website is ordained by the interests of the users. There will always be people in all countries who genuinely
- Want to learn algorithms and DS
- Want to get a job through hiring challenges
- Who just want to get better in cp for say stars or putting it as a cool achievement on their resume or for fun.
Now this means the website must be effective.
And I think codechef is.
No one will question you when you say, there are a lot of people who cheat.
But the amount of people who genuinely do it through sheer hard work and will power are much more than the wrong-doers.
Would you decide to close every shop’s business just because a robbery occured in another shop?
Codechef and other sites are strict enough in their plagiarism checks and there is admittedly room for improvement and they are working things out but just stopping long for that isn’t right imho because
- Long challenges provided two weekends so everyone whether he’s a student or a professional gets a chance to devote a few days to something they love . I’ve started long months ago a few days late when I was working and still managed to squeeze a few submissions in .
- If someone is not that good at short challenges, he has more time to think and hone his skills in long. If you want to get better fast, you must be able to first solve the problem ( If you can do it slowly, you can do it quickly, someone get the reference pls)
- You learn much more in long challenges. The first problem is cakewalk, and gradually gets harder and most longs are well balanced so not a huge difficulty gap like short ones.
- The editorials are insanely good. Sometimes you can learn more from the code of someone who’s really good at his craft. @vijju123 , @ssjgz , @tmwilliamlin are all really really good at explaining hard problems.
- They’re just so goddamn fun to participate!
And to top it all off, it’s a unique challenge format that has a huge learning curve for people of all skill levels

Nothing but personal preference. People gravitate towards things that capture their fantasy.
Personally, I’ve participated in a few short contests when I was starting out, I just liked long challenges a lot better because of the longer time to think and wider variety of problems to tackle and I want to really get better at long and solve all problems in my division atleast once
I’ve heard the argument people who do short are better numerous times . Just think both require different skill sets.
Don’t you think people should be allowed to decide in what they want to shine and invest their time.
