PROBLEM:
You are given an array S of length M. Find the number of permutations P of \{1, 2, \ldots, N\} such that S_i = (P_i + P_{i\bmod M + 1}) for each 1 \leq i \leq M.
EXPLANATION:
Suppose we fix the value of P_1.
Then, observe that:
- S_1 = P_1 + P_2 \implies P_2 = S_1 - P_1
- S_2 = P_2 + P_3 \implies P_3 = S_2 - P_2 = S_2 - S_1 + P_1
- S_3 = P_3 + P_4 \implies P_4 = S_3 - S_2 + S_1 - P_1
\vdots - S_{M-1} = P_{M-1} + P_M \implies P_M = S_{M-1} - S_{M-2} + \ldots + (-1)^{M} S_1 + (-1)^{M-1} P_1
- S_M = P_M + P_1 \implies P_1 = S_M - S_{M-1} + S_{M-2} - \ldots + (-1)^{M+1} S_1 + (-1)^M P_1
That is, once P_1 is fixed, the values of all of P_2, P_3, \ldots, P_M are fixed uniquely, in terms of alternating sums of the S_i values.
Further, the cyclicity of the system gives us an additional constraint that P_1 must itself satisfy, represented by the last equation.
Now, we want P to be a permutation of \{1, 2, \ldots, N\}, so the values of P_i obtained this way must be distinct integers in [1, N].
If they are indeed distinct integers, the remaining (N-M) elements can be placed in the remaining positions in any order at all since S will be unaffected by them; leading to a multiplier of (N-M)!
So, the final answer is simply (N-M)! multiplied by the number of valid values of P_1.
Our task now shifts to determining when such a value is valid.
For a value of P_1 to be valid, two conditions must be satisfied:
- For each 1 \leq i \leq M, the generated value should satisfy 1 \leq P_i \leq N
- For each pair of (i, j) with 1 \leq i \lt j \leq M, we must have P_i \neq P_j
These two conditions are both necessary and sufficient.
Let’s check each of them in turn.
First, checking whether the values lie in [1, N].
For this, let’s see what our values actually are.
We have:
- For even i, P_i = S_{i-1} - S_{i-2} + \ldots + S_1 - P_1
Note that the -P_1 term aside, this is just an alternating prefix sum of S.
So, it’s enough to know the maximum/minimum values of this alternating prefix sum at its odd indices (note that the prefix sum is till index i-1 which is odd), and check if subtracting P_1 from them will stay within [1, N]. - For odd i, P_i = S_{i-1} - S_{i-2} + \ldots - S_1 + P_1
Once again this is an alternating prefix sum, just at the even indices again. Again it’s enough to know the maximum/minimum of them and check if adding P_1 satisfies the range.
For convenience, let’s define the alternating prefix sum array A, as A_0 = 0 and A_i = S_i - A_{i-1} for i \geq 1.
The values of P can then be written as P_i = A_i - P_i for even i, and P_i = A_i + P_i for odd i.
Next, we must ensure that P_i \neq P_j for any generated values.
As noted above, there are two types of values: those corresponding to +P_1, and those corresponding to -P_1.
If P_i = P_j and i and j have the same parity (meaning these correspond to the same “type” of element), we would have A_i - P_1 = A_j - P_1 (or A_i + P_1 = A_j + P_1 depending on parity of i, doesn’t really matter).
This means A_i = A_j would hold.
So, we require that all even-indexed A are distinct, and all odd-indexed A are distinct.
That leaves the case where P_i = P_j but i and j have different parities.
Suppose i \lt j, i is odd and j is even. This would then mean
A_i + P_1 = A_j - P_1 \implies 2P_1 = A_j - A_i
On the other hand, if the parities were flipped we’d have A_i - P_1 = A_j + P_1 instead, giving us 2P_1 = A_i - A_j instead.
In either case, note that 2P_1 equals the even-indexed element of A, minus the odd-indexed element of A.
To check if this is possible, we need to be able to compute all such possible sums quickly.
This is a straightforward application of convolution: see here for instance.
The convolution only needs to be done once, after which each value of 2P_1 can be quickly looked up in the result.
Finally, we have the cyclic condition, i.e.
P_1 = S_M - S_{M-1} + S_{M-2} - \ldots + (-1)^{M+1} S_1 + (-1)^M P_1
This depends a bit on the parity of M, so let’s analyze both cases.
- M is odd.
Here, note that (-1)^M P_1 resolves to -P_1, so taking it to the left side gives us an expression for 2P_1.
Essentially, 2P_1 is a constant, which means P_1 must also be a constant.
So, there’s only one value of P_1 that needs to be checked for, rather than all N. - M is even.
Here, (-1)^M P_1 resolves to P_1, which means P_1 can be cancelled from both sides.
That leaves us with the condition S_M - S_{M-1} + S_{M-2} - \ldots - S_1 = 0, which is either true or false.
If it’s false then no valid P_1 can exist; if it’s true then it doesn’t constrain P_1 in any way so all the other conditions need to be checked instead.
