I find rating as the fuel needed for me to give my best. So, I think it depends on the individual more and cannot be generalized.

People actually put their ratings on their resume.
Competitive Coding is a sports and your name and position in leaderboard is the motivation for most people. Even if competitive Coding is fun , everyone actually cares about their ratings even if they deny it here.

I think focusing on rating is useless, one must focus on the number of problems they solved in a contest and what they have learned from it, rating is just a number what mainly matters is the number of problems solved efficiently and accurately in a given time, though rating gives a measure of performance in contests but competitive programming is not about comparing others by the rating but beating ourselves and improving.
