How about replacing long challenge with several short contests?

Looks like you are always in a mood of starting a heated argument. I challenge you to upsolve one long challenge problem in atmost 2 hrs even after looking the approach(but not the codes). Do you accept it? I will give you the problem. Also you are not allowed to copy anyone’s library, since you have the freedom to look solution. Most probably the problem would require Advanced concepts like FFT/NTT.

1. Wont change anything, only participation will go down. Cheating on various kick start, cf contests have proved that, we indians are more inclined towards the sith than towards the jedi.
   Lets just say I will become 1 star without longs, but there are many who will stay 5/6 easily with only shorts. The ratings will more or less remain the same.
2. Totally true. But when u see submissions going up on a problem u haven’t solved in a long, it actually pushes ur limits too (or u can be demotivated, u always have a choice). It has pushed me multiple times tbh.
3. Solve in the last 5 days then, don’t blame anyone if it backfires.

5. I doubt people learn too many new things from short, especially since the recent contests require thinking and coding fast more than algorithmic skills. But anyways, a valid point.

PS-If you remove ratings from a contest, will it actually help? I mean how will u push ur limits if u’ve nothing to lose

Looks like you are not getting my point at all, I never said average coders will be able to solve these problems in 2hrs but they can always upsolve them after the contest whats the problem in that ?.

That’s your problem right we don’t have anything to do with that? you definitely have an option to do those problems while upsolving and if you’re not availing it it’s not anyone’s fault but yours.

The topic of Discussion is “Should we replace long with several short contests”. My answer is No because then you won’t get problems which are as tough as the last 2-3 problems of long. You won’t learn new algorithms in short contest. Show me any short contest problem whose solution requires you to study some research paper. But I can show many problems of long contest.
You are just arguing on “Upsolving Part” and you are the only one who took the discussion topic to some other direction.

Have you ever done any codeforces Div1-Div-2 combined round like cf globals and other combined rounds or in fact tried any problems in the later half of Div1 contest?

I haven’t participated much on codeforces so can’t say about it. I was saying about codechef onlu. But do they ask problems where you need to study research papers?

I think you mean D, E, F problems and the answer is No. I can’t even solve Div.2 F and I think that’s Div.1 C.

Any problem if you can suggest? You must have seen that when the problem idea is trivial(like Adding AP on array when lazy prop is also permitted), then also many people can’t code it.
I agree that problem would be extremely difficult but code would be short or would use some known ds/algo.

Yeah sure,check this It is one of the problem which I was working on lately and fun fact is that it is from a normal educational round. It requires knowledge of lagrangian interpolation algorithm (which you might be familiar with if you’ve done any course on numerical methods).

It takes up huge chunk from a month, maybe they could trim down the duration of long challenge and add another contest in the place of that? This will help students to get result of their hard work and learning faster so they are always motivated.

There are some people who solve it for 7-8 days. Maybe parallel contests is a good idea.

Yes I have solved that problem before. This idea is very common now. Not sure about that time.

I don’t think I have ever seen two rated contests running simultaneously, but it might be interesting to see if codechef could make that possible.

I don’t care rates or plagiarism but I like the long challange as I don’t always have time for my hobby (work, family…). I definitely like the way I read the problems and come up with a solution after a day. There are some tricky ones as well, where - at least me at the knowledge I have - have to dig into on paper and create a naive solution and/or test cases to discover the appropriate algo with fitting big O.
There are several short contests so you can have your favourites there but only some long contests - please don’t want to ruine them. If you are worried about ranks, transfrom your suggestion to make long challange unrated and/or separated from the other ranklist.
